Bob Coates - Nightscape and Milky Way
April 11, 2026
Website: https://successful-photographer.com/
In this presentation, Bob shares a wealth of knowledge about the technical side of night photography—how to capture long exposures, properly set up a camera for star trails, and fine-tune your settings to get the best results. He teaches about composition, how to use foreground elements like the iconic red rocks of Sedona to create a sense of depth, and how to work with lighting to enhance your shots. Once captured your images processing and Bob will share some ideas on best practices.
Bob says, “I liken the capture of wonderful Starscapes to playing a four dimension board game. There needs to be an interesting foreground to place before the magnificent night sky. Multiple techniques are utilized to capture the elements which are then processed to make the final image.”
Bob Coates’ Milky Way workshops in Sedona, AZ, are a fantastic way for both beginner and experienced photographers to dive into astro landscape photography, AKA Nightscapes. Sedona’s clear skies and stunning landscapes make it one of the best places in the U.S. to capture the Milky Way in all its glory. Bob takes full advantage of the region’s natural beauty, guiding participants through the process of shooting the stars, moon, and galaxies above. Bob share ideas you improve your night photography whether you are just getting started or beginning to push the boundaries of the night sky landscape genre
